This a serious issue with myself regarding future iPhone hacking. Folks on IRC have been really kind and worked really hard. Then all it takes is a few dumb ass members to spoil all the fun.

This is a repost of an iClarified article:

iPhone Dev-Team Says Geohot Using Stolen Code
Sunday, 13th July 2008, 10:07 am
The iPhone Dev-Team says Geohot is using stolen code to provoke them into an early release of PwnageTool.

In a lengthy posting on why its best not to rush the release of the jailbreak the iPhone Dev-Team writes that Geohot was kicked off the team for not abiding by their rules. Apparently, Geohots first hardware hack was a result of some of their tools. Now they believe one of their team members has leaked a copy of their exploit to Geohot and that George is using the exploit to provoke them into releasing PwnageTool.

Over the last year we’ve discovered some interesting things about the software used in the iPhone. These “hacks” , “exploits” and “techniques”, or whatever you want to call them, are valuable – not only from a financial perspective (so scummy people can sell unlocking software) but also from a strategic point of view. Think of it like a game of poker, showing your hand too early would certainly make you lose “the game”.

The majority of iPhone users are not technical – they want an easy, one-stop, simple application that will allow them to quickly and painlessly unlock their phone. If we were to release a crummy command-line based tool that does the immediate job that everyone is screaming for, we’d only end up in the following situation:

1) The technique is released to the world and people use this technique to quickly create GUI apps that they charge cash-money for, or re-release something hacky and horrible that bricks lots of devices, or for example disables the WiFi that then causes more stress that ultimately comes back to us

2) The technique is exposed to the vendor, allowing them to locate and repair the security hole. Sometimes these security holes span product versions, for example: between the first generation and second generation iPhone. In such a case releasing the knowledge in the middle of the product development cycle is pointless and risks the “usefulness” of the technique – especially if there are existing hacks/techniques that work just fine.

The iPhone DevTeam is comprised of a group of people who work together over IRC from various parts of the world. This distributed method of working happens 24 hours a day with people performing tasks in the time that best suits their time-zones. It is a completely self-managing, self-regulating and member-funded organization. Most of us have never met face-to-face and we rarely know real names – in fact, we would more than likely not recognize each other if we walk past one another on the street. Despite this we follow a strict “hacker code”: ground rules by which we all abide.

Perhaps the foremost of these rules is management of knowledge. We keep certain information private, restricted to members of the team only (to help with points 1 and 2 above), and members are entrusted to make sure this secrecy is consistently enforced. This makes the team. Only when there is a majority vote from the team do we make any announcement or release.

So now we come onto Geohot, the self appointed media frontman for last year’s iPhone hacks. Geohot actually worked with us a month or so before the media-circus that he led. Geohot is certainly a bright guy, but he couldn’t abide by rules that I described in the last paragraph and because of this he was asked to leave the team. Of course like any hacker Geohot continued on for his goal.

Using some of our techniques and tools (and some of his) and using his own brain power (and that of an unnamed Russian) he was able to release his hardware hack and demonstrate the first unlocked iPhone to the world, he has also demonstrated other things during the last year and some of those releases have helped us with our work.

We thought that Geohot would have matured somewhat in the last year, but this clearly isn’t the case, as sadly one of the team members has leaked a copy of our exploit to Geohot and he is now using this to provoke us into making an early release :-(

So finally, just in case some of you were wondering, we’re not sitting on this tool because we’re full of ourselves or stuck up our own asses. We’re not sitting on it cause we like to see you writhe. We are testing it to make sure it’s as glitch-free as we can make it. We want to avoid releasing something that turns expensive phones into pretty looking paperweights. Don’t you agree it’s worth the wait?

If others want to feel like they’re in control by posting all-knowing entries on their blogs, we can’t stop that, but the new PwnageTool will be released when it’s ready, and not a moment later.

I was having a hunt on iPhone threads and found this brilliant post. Don’t get me wrong I love my iPhone but really looking at my rough first gen and a legit 3g. My original idea of waiting for the next version is being smart. I really would have allot more fun spending that spare cash on MacBook.

I hope you too enjoy this post as I did ?

i’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again:

1) GPS…worthless, I already have a stand alone gps in my jeep already. Any cell phone gps is worthless. I had a 8800 blackberry or whatever the top of the line model was. GPS..never used once. To top that off the data usage u will use will cost you BIG bucks. So this addition is worthless

2) 3G…… ???? … all I can say is .. WOWWWW…. WHO CARES. When I’m at home I will surf the internet UNLIMITED and download UNLIMITED via speeds 10x faster than 3G. When I’m at a bar with friends, iPhone turns into a ‘cell phone’. Voice calls only…. When I’m driving .. no need to browse. When I go to work, no time to browse. When I go to a coffee shop during lunch break…cry me a river…I don’t need no extreme speeds.. this is ‘casual’ browsing just to pass time by. What is the point of 3g? I don’t get it. It helps me in no way, and everyone that I’ve spoken to that I know feel the same way.

So bottom line. Those crying about the 3g phone not having all these extra upgrades. Live with it. All this is, is the 2g iphone with 3g capability and a few little goodies added in to entice you to waste more money. Apple is NOT making the iPhone 2nd gen. So with all the requests you hoped would have been added…if they’re not added in the 2nd generation iphone, THEN you can whine about it. But for the time being, this is like iPhone generation 1.5…

Let me give you whiny babies another example:

It’s like buying a TV with the model 5080 that only displays 720p, or buying the 5010 model that displays 1080p. Same generation, just that the 5010 is the upgraded model with better features. You won’t get what you ‘really’ want until the next gen comes out………. end of story.

As someone already said. 3g is a marketing ploy…AND IT’S WORKING! End of story. Way to go apple, double your money! If I knew the iPhone would be a hot product and KNEW 3g was the future, I’d release it first as a 2G model…make MILLIONS. Then I’d release the 3g model that was probably planned to be released just after the 2g was released, but was never announced so they can make WAY MORE MILLIONS. After this novelty wears off, they’ll sell the iPhone 2 which will make more millions. Like it or not, thats business. I’ve always laughed at the requests for front camera for video calling etc. Sure, without front video camera, how can u really do video calling..whether you have 3G or not? You can’t. That’s why apple will wait until the next gen to impliment that, because now they will just give you a ‘taste’ of the 3g for browsing, so all the hundreds of thousands of suckers that want to get ’3g’ just so they can be ‘with the best out there’……….. and when the next gen comes out all you sheep will sell your 3g phones on eBay to get the ‘latest and greatest’. You think this hasn’t been planned out already???

There’s so much market research that goes on behind the scenes that so many people think that they will cry about something and get what they want. They don’t truly realize that these companies care NOTHING about what you want. All they care about is ‘if we do it this way, will we make the most money, and will there be any way to improve our product in the future to bring the same people back to us to give us even more money than we made the first time’. End of story

I know for most of you this is obvious. But some people’s comments that I’ve read, have been almost in shock that certain features were not added. There’s NOTHING to be in shock about at all. This is pure and simple reality in business. Learn it, and if you REALLY want to show a company that they can’t treat you like sheeps, DO NOT BUY THE PRODUCT, and that is the ONLY time they will listen. Unfortunately, the amount of sheeps out there far outweigh the ones that want to stand up and ‘make’ the corporation listen to us, so in the end the big business wins…each and every time. I am so stoked today with the Telstra announcement. Now if I can get hold of a sim that allows my first gen phone to work without hacking. I will be over the moon. According to a friend who used to work for Telstra I should be able to request a new NextG sim and change over to the iPhone plan. This will save me $10 per month and give me access to the free WiFi they are offering iPhone customers. Just to be cautious I have reserved a 3G phone. As I am out of contract and they did offer me a new handset last year, that I declined. Damm this is such good news so over hacking my phone with firmware upgrades. Yeaaa Haaaa
